So I’ve mentioned Weird Heroes of Public Access in my Favorite Zines of 2023 post, and I’m still loving it. I keep thinking about how perfect the vibes are. I started making my own supplemental zine out of pure love and how inspiring the core material felt. I first wrote an adventure, originally titled The Red Truth of Fellowship Farm, but it later became The Yellow Truth of Fellowship Farm. This adventure has everything: drugs, murder, possession, prophetic comic books, cultists, and teen pregnancy!
You’ll be able to get it for a great deal through the Kickstarter campaign. It launches on April 30th so get ready!
After later getting to play (as opposed to run) some WHPA, I thought that a good tool for game masters would be some random tables. I started with weird people who might come to Fairhaven and realized that this is a game that uses d6s so I gotta make it a table that uses the same dice. But I had come up with about a dozen weirdos. A 2d6 table would have caused some weirdos way more common than others. So I resolved to make 36 entries for a d66 table! I challenge anyone to figure out all the references that inspired the characters. I got characters with inspirations ranging from The Sopranos to Twin Peaks to Superfly. But just like the adventure, some of these characters changed. The Marlin Brothers are looking for their cryptid hunting mother, Julia. Last time they saw her, she said she was going to Fairhaven and said something about “the play” and “the King”.
The work of Robert Chambers continued to creep into my writing. I started writing d66 tables for strange complications that a judge could throw into an adventure and another d66 table of odd places that a judge could stick in or around Fairhaven. One strange complications began as “A car explodes.” It morphed into “A car explodes. Masked figures disappear down an alley.”
The weird places, that a judge could use as a hideout or a place to find new evidence, changed too. Now our weird heroes might find “A music festival. It was never announced and it never ends. You’ve never heard any of the bands and you don’t know anyone there. If you leave, you may never find it again.”
And the adverts. Well, you’ve seen one of them now. Go check out the Kickstarter. There’s even more.
Ever read anything that you can’t stop thinking about? Should I finally read House of Leaves and make something really weird?
