Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland is a radical game. Using BX as its rules basis, its like playing a post-apocalyptic version of your favorite Saturday morning cartoons. It’s a favorite that I’ve covered before on this post. And right now its having a big, big Backerkit campaign to fund the printing of two new big books: Deities and Demi-Bros & Deadly Dudez/Toxic Creeps. Keep on reading and the Neon Lord himself, Brian Shutter, will give you the skinny on what he’s up to!
You're packing a ton of material into both these books! Deities and Demi-Bros has new classes, wrestling rules, rules for levels 11-20, and all sorts of godz. What kind of advice do you have for game masters who want to run a game with a big focus on demi-bros or high-level games?
Expect more epic-style fights over the fast-paced pace of deadly lower-level adventures! These higher-level threats will not only bring the heat to firepower but also expect some final form variations! The gods are back and they are mad, lots of new cults, followers, zealots, and maniacs will be popping up and all serve an angry god. Until the turmoil settles of course! 10 million years locked in a hell cell can make anyone a bit cranky!
Deadly Dudez/Toxic Creeps has 100+ new baddies to battle, new encounter tables, adventure hooks, and a new monster generator. Can you tell us about some of the gnarliest monsters you got in the book?
When it comes to the new nasties that are coming in DD/TC there is a slew of new factions popping up, from the Skelebots from Skelewar 2 down to the Slegs, an ancient xeno race that has been living in the Carnage Jungles since the Bogus Age. A lot of the places people run NL games will have new baddies from there added. Expect more for Space Bulk, Weird West, Burgerworld, Dimension-X, and Omega Level Threats. The OLM's are the big Skeletors and Dr. Dooms of the world. One of my ultimate favorites is the Chronosaur!! A time-traveling cybernetically enhanced T-rex that wants nothing more than the destruction of Detroit-Prime! Another good one is Questor, the ancient space elf. Hailing from Phantasia, Questor is an evil menace on a never-ending crusade to wipe the Dwarlfings off the face of the galaxy. This book goes from small Poisonous Insect Gels all the way up to planet-destroying threats!
Hunter Jackson, the original creator of the props, costumes, and concepts behind the band GWAR! and Freakshow Wrestling SUPERSTAR, is joining the team. What will be his role in this project? Is he going to mostly be on art, or will he be involved in other aspects as well?
Hunter is now involved with more than just D&DB! He will be bringing his awesome ideas to the game world as well as art for these books and future books in the Neon Lords line as well as rules help and art in the upcoming skirmish/board game Rollerbrawl.
You've got awesome stretch goals like the glow-in-the-dark slammer. Will there be any special rule to integrate use of the slammer at the table? Want to give folks at more stretch goals or Backerkit exclusives that they can get?
P is for Power Caps in the Core Rulez has all the rules to play POGs in game as well as a special alt-initiative system using POGs. The Slammer of the Gods is also a rare magical item in the Core book!! At 20k we unlocked everything I had ready for the project as I never thought we would have made it this far! I am humbled and grateful for all the support in this project. We have series 3 POGs that were unlocked at 20k to go with the Slammer. Above that a secret is 30k unlocks a deck of items and equipment cards for ease of looting! From there we will have to see what we unlock!!
Can you tell us some about your Patreon: Knights of the Slime Table? If folks wanted to join up, what kind of slimy goodness is in store for them?
The Patreon is like the BK kids club we always wanted to join as kids but never did. Secret messages with special decoders, membership cards, and special buttons/pins are just the start! Each month I release a short 8-ish page adventure and a newsletter called Trash From the Slimetable where I add adventure hooks, fun items, and other wild things you would want for your games. I also take letters from the fans and reply to them in the newsletter!
Anything else that you want to share with folks?
If you are looking to jump into the Neon Lords world we run a weekly Wednesday game over on the Neon Lords Discord! Come hang out it's a blast over there and I hope to see you in a game soon!
What’s your favorite class from Neon Lords? Any wild plans for an epic level game?
